Black and White Halloween

Halloween is the spookiest holiday of the year with the most potential cavities. Thousands of people dress in costumes for a night of fun and adventure. Halloween decorating is quite often over the top with larger than life decor, and eerie prop decorations. For this reason, many shy away from any blood curdling embellishments. Do not let October 31st pass you without decorating. Here are some stylish options to consider for Halloween.

Fall Wreaths

A nice simple wreath on the front door is a welcoming and warming touch, a sort of decorative warm-up to the abundance of Christmas. Recently I have seen some really great new things in the world of modern fall wreaths. Here are my top eight modern wreath picks:

Fall 2011 Decorating Trends

As school starts back up and temperatures begin cooling by even the slightest degree, one word pops into our minds – FALL! It has been an incredibly hot summer and we are beginning to anticipate cooler weather, pumpkins, cinnamon spice candles, delicious comfort food and fall decorating, of course!

I’ve noticed these decorating elements recently that I expect to see more frequently as homes are decorated and made cozy to welcome Autumn. I hope you are inspired to use some of these fall trends in your home!

Here are my favorites:

Repurposed Decor

In this age of green living, it is only natural that as we seek to reduce our waste through reusing and recycling, we also look for ways to repurpose “trash” into beautiful home decor. Creating headboards from pallets and shutters, benches from headboards and old luggage and stunning architectural wall art from old windows are just a few ways to repurpose unlikely items into home decor.

Vintage Treasures

There is something magical about decorating with elements from the past. Not only is the quality oftentimes superior to modern counterparts, but vintage decor can bring wonderful balance to our twenty-first century spaces. I love thinking about where various vintage accessories have been and the events that they witnessed. Some of my favorite pieces are vintage fans, Pyrex, scales, soda boxes and books.

 Layered Textures

Every room needs a layering of textures to create warmth and visual interest. Even modern, minimal spaces {like the one above} incorporate many different textures to create a beautiful, inviting and balanced space. Fabrics are obviously textured, but natural materials like wood, plants and stones also have textural qualities. 

Teal & Burnt Sienna

Teal and burnt sienna are in big right now, and I think they will continue to be big through the fall season.  I love this retro-turned-modern color combo along with the related complimentary lighter and darker hues.  If you have a fairly neutral color palette in your home, consider adding a pop of teal and burnt sienna with pillows, throws and accessories!

Metallic Elements

Last, but not least, metallics are a timeless classic that seem to be bigger than ever.  Finishes such as chrome, brushed nickel, antique brass, bronze, copper and even galvanized steel can be found on wallpaper, lamps, photo frames, candlesticks and wall decor.  Shiny brass is even making a comeback.  I haven’t yet jumped on that train, but a few pieces would be pretty, especially for fall.
